SUICIDE KINGS

SUICIDE KINGS is my JJK-inspired transgender shinigami horror comic about honor, loyalty, contract killing, DID, inescapable dread, substance addiction, obsession, abandonment, forsaking god / becoming god, magic, ferocity, monstrosity, loveliness, charm, guilt, seduction, eternity, violence, wishmaking, and love ft. the impossibility of translating trauma.
SYNOPSIS
SUICIDE KINGS is a queer psychological horror graphic novel that is an homage to Jujutsu Kaisen's emotionally-charged dark sorcery while simultaneously combiningthe complex allegorical philosophy of symbolic dehumanization from Watership Down, but instead of rabbits, it uses Japanese death gods (shinigami) as the vehicle to exhibit a message about the impossibility and necessity of translating trauma. The avant-garde design philosophy seeks to utilize experimental literary structure to break out of genre syerotypes and create a completely new narrative style. Depicted on every page is the stream of consciousness itself in a unique visual layout that juxtaposes the marginalia of unspoken thought versus the words that are explicitly said. Similar to the globally successful Jujutsu Kaisen, SUICIDE KINGS seeks to portray psychological horror through a medium of sorcery and dark magic. As a member of the Vietnamese diaspora born in the United States who is bilingual in Japanese, I take thorough inspiration from manga and anime when it comes to designing magical systems with a multicultural Asiatic fantasy flair.SUICIDE KINGS in many regards is about the impossibility of translating trauma - and the desperation that comes out of the need to communicate regardless, since the voices of those who have experienced hurt must not be silenced in order to build a better, more hopeful world.
